Who We Are
The Iron Sharpens Iron Mentoring Inc., (ISIM) program is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, with a mission to prepare young people to become leaders for the purpose of empowering their communities by helping them become their best selves.
ISIM has provided mentoring services in Clark County since 2014 and serves vulnerable, high-risk youth (ages 9-18). The youth selected for ISIM are in great danger of school failure, gang and drug involvement, criminal behavior, and other long-term negative behaviors. The mentoring program offered at Iron Sharpens Iron is a strengths-based approach to promote boys and young men to a safe and healthy passage through pre-teen and adolescent years.
ISIM meets the core developmental need of all youth for positive relationships and gives them the opportunity to address masculinity definitions and behaviors and to build leadership capacity. ISIM accomplishes these individual positive outcomes through its incorporation of a scientifically proven, evidence-based curriculum titled “The Council for Boys and Young Men” and designed by the One Circle Foundation.
Using trained and certified adult mentors, ISIM provides the youth with 12 weekly interactive workshops designed to promote their natural strengths and to increase their options about being male in today's world. Together, the mentors and youth challenge myths about how to be a "real boy" or "real man". The young men engage in activities, dialogue and self- expression to question stereotypical concepts and to increase their emotional, social and cultural literacy by promoting valuable relationships with peers and adult facilitators.
